An ellipse of wound natural jute cord carried on a matt black iron stem that arches over a weighted disc base.

The shade is built from fine natural cord wound tightly over a frame, tapering to a point on each side so it reads as a flattened ellipse rather than a drum. Light escapes through the weave as a soft grain all around and drops cleanly out of the open underside, which is why this sits well next to a chair. The stem is matt black iron, bent into a long shallow hook so the shade hangs forward over the base instead of sitting on top of it, and the round disc foot keeps the footprint small enough for a corner. The contrast of black metal against pale woven cord is the whole idea.

Where it works: a reading corner beside an armchair, a living room corner, or a bedroom where a floor lamp replaces a bedside table.
