Rasht Lamp Shade

A flattened rattan ellipse woven in natural straw with bands of green through it, breaking the light into a soft speckled pattern overhead.

The shade is woven over an iron frame in rattan and paper rope, with narrow bands of green worked into the weave at intervals so it does not read as a plain basket. The weave is deliberately open, and that is the point of it: lit, it throws a speckled pattern of light and shadow across the ceiling and the walls around it, and unlit it reads as a piece of basketry rather than a light fitting. The profile is a flattened ellipse, spreading wide without dropping far, which suits a room with an ordinary ceiling height.

Where it works: over a dining table, in a living room, or in a bedroom where a wide shade can hang without being in the way.
