An opal glass globe under a flat black collar and hoop, with a short block of walnut set into the top where the cable enters, so the wood is the only warm note.

Opal glass diffuses rather than transmits, so the globe lights evenly across its whole surface with no bright spot where the lamp sits, which is why this shape has stayed in production for a century. The metalwork here is flat black and deliberately plain, a collar under the globe and a hoop over the top, and the walnut block sitting between them is the only piece of warmth in the fitting. The cable is black and drops straight from the yoke, so the pendant hangs cleanly with nothing to adjust.

Where it works: over a bedside table, in a run along a kitchen island, or singly in a hallway where a small clean pendant is enough.
