Saravan Flush Ceiling Light

A brass cylinder pierced with a grid of small round holes, fixed straight to a flat ceiling plate so nothing hangs below it but the shade itself.

The shade is a plain drum of brass drilled with an even field of dots, so the light leaves in two ways at once: a warm filtered downlight straight down out of the open bottom, and sideways through hundreds of small holes that throw a fine dotted pattern onto the ceiling and the top of the walls. The brass has an aged, slightly uneven surface rather than a mirror polish, which suits the pattern. The plate sits flat to the ceiling with no stem or chain, which is what makes it usable in a room without height.

Where it works: a hallway or landing with a low ceiling, or any room where a hanging fitting would be in the way.

A metal shade with the lamp inside it runs warm, so an LED lamp is the sensible choice over a halogen.
